Reed Beds

If despite all the cost and environmental benefits of a combined waterless toilet and grey water treatment system, with the possible option of water reuse, you decide you must flush water down the toilet, please consider a reedbed system.

The system consists of a flushing toilet, septic tank and treatment tanks which contain gravel and water loving plants. The gravel works in much the same way as sand in establishing biofilms and the reeds reduce the water and nutrient flow to the sub surface irrigation area. The tanks for a typical family home occupy a surface area of 20 square metres. The overall cost is typically $10,000 - 12,000 excluding the toilet.

We can refer you to suppliers and installers of reed beds in several parts of Australia.
